SoundConvert 2.0

Filed under: Geek — Josh @ 10:53 am

I posted several months ago on converting ACT files recorded on an MP3 player to something readable on a computer. It’s probably without competition the most-read and commented-on post on this site: there are many people out there who are looking for a tool to do this. And it seems that the ACT files generated by newer MP3 player devices aren’t compatible with the older convertors.

So, one of the readers, Phil “Mumbles”, discovered a tool that works for this stuff. He’s sent me the file after having cut it down from 8MB for a few apps to under 300KB for the just new sound convertor tool.

You can download it here — please post if it works or doesn’t work with your MP3 player/recorder so that other people looking for information on their device can find it.

One closing note from Phil:

and BTW,

It appears to hang if you don’t let it run its course (gives a not responding msg). the “hang” grows accordingly with the .act file size.

Cheers

Phil

  3. Finally a Sound Converter that works. Thanks.
I wonder if in the package with 8 MB mentioned by Phil we
can find a TELBOOK.EXE that enables the user to sort the
    database TELBOOK.BIN in alphabetical order.

  5. This is a better link right from the factory itself
drivers xiron with telbook.exe sound converter 2.0 etc just instal the win98 drivers and you get everything for you’re mp3 player.

  6. The converter works for me BUT…

    Simple request:
Need to support command line parameter
    e.g. SoundCon.exe -s:”mySourcePath” [-d:"my destination path"]
    [-p] for play

    Less simple (and less important):
    1. Convert to mp3
    2. Expose as dll - to allow for use in other tools
    3. Expose as add-on to other players and convertes (e.g. CDex)

    Thanks a lot

  7. Hi,
I appreciate the help given, but tools indicated through links above didn´t work for
    my Starex mp3 player.
If you are still having problems, I´d better suggest to anyone looking for
Sound Convert to try the download link indicated in the first message.
About the TELBOOK, I would ask Phil, if he is reading this board, to post the
remaining software of his package. (Obs.: My TELBOOK.EXE is working fine, but it
does not let the user to sort in alphabetical order.)
    Thanks,
    Marcos.

  9. YES!!!! IT WORKS FINE.

It reliefed me from lots of headaches. Thanks Phill, whomever you are and wherever you are.

It lingers a little, but just relax, get a cup of coffee and let your PC do her job.

Now it is time for some quality time at the pub.

    Enjoy.

  50. It worked, it converts the act into a sound file, but cannot be sure of the new format. Windows media player’s icon was asigned, but it isn’t capable of playing the file. The sound converter does, at least.
Because of the bigger file size, I believe some kind of .wav file is made. Can it be further converted into an mp3 file?

This was used files taken from a Mikomi ET-880 digital dictation machine.

Good job too as I renamed them and they wouldn’t play again on the machine!

Other apps failed, including the older version of the same one which produced an msdxm.ocx error. I can now record .ACT audio, convert them to .WAV with your tool and listen to them on my PC. 105. I work on PC with MS Win XP and tried to convert files from a “Soundwave” MP3 USB key that records long tracks in ACT format.

The SoundConverter 2.0 does just the same as for a number of other people: it stupidly keeps asking to copy the file to %s wherever you put it (desktop, area of program launching, disk root, etc).

On the contrary, the SoundCon program does it fast and easy to a .WAV file located at the same place as the original one.

Thanks a lot for providing the executable, it took ages (relatively:) to find out that tool! This is a great place for this resource! Moreover , it’s a virus-free one and it is very tiny!

I’ll keep this place in my favorite links!
    Keep going and take care.

  107. Thanks a lot! This works, and totally saves my ass from transcribing interviews directly from an MP3 player with no rewind function! For those of you using CD-R King players to record things, this is the converter that works. Thanks again!

  109. I too have the same problem, like so many others. .ACT extension files, recorded by my mp3 player, aren’t played in my computer. If you are having any successful converter, please send me a copy or the link.

  112. Thanks for this Software, it works fine. I could convert .ACT file I had done with a mpman mp3 player…
When using the soft, wait until the convertion is done. The screen info is not really right. You could think that it is finished converting as the soft is still working…
    Many thanks…
